Summer is in full swing. It is the glorious season of music and art festivals, exciting travel plans, and one of life’s most simple pleasures, the barbeque! With that in mind, it is also the time when temps are on the rise. We’ve gathered some innovative ideas to keep your cool as we move into the warmest weeks of summer in the Silicon Valley…
Stay hydrated: Although it’s obvious, we often forget. Drink water, not super-sized sodas, to stay hydrated. Without proper hydration, your body heats up faster than normal.
Stay away from the oven. Take the night off from inside the kitchen and give grilling a chance. Almost anything can be grilled, even pizza!
Fresh Ways to Cool:
Make It Spicy: It may seem strange to suggest eating hot food on a sweltering day, but the capsaicin in the spicy food promotes sweating (without raising your body temperature), which will actually evaporate and cool you off. Perhaps that’s why locales with high temperatures, such as India and Thailand, tend to serve some of the world’s spiciest foods! To find out where the cream of the spicy crop is being served in Silicon Valley check out The Metro’s Best of Silicon Valley 2013 Food & Drink.
Cool Your Pulse Points: It feels hot all over, but in places where your blood is closer to the surface of your body, the temperature is actually higher. These pulse points include your wrists, back of neck, forehead and temples. Try running cool water over these parts several times a day. You can also place a cool or damp compress in these areas to cool you off.
Sleep cool: Try tossing your bed sheets and pillowcases into the freezer an hour or two before turning in. It’s a truly cool way to drift off to sleep.
